Unresolved x 100
I have this idea that “Trump” may be the most spoken-aloud word in the world right now. That’s counting other languages, since “Trump” needs no translation, including in places where they pronounce it “Troomp.” I have no idea how to prove this. I just know that – at least among names, and maybe even among all nouns -- I can’t think of any serious challenger.
And who doubts that this proposition would play nicely in the mind (and ego) of the man in the White House himself, should he learn of it? As would the shape of the program Intelligence Squared is staging on April 24th.
On the week that marks Donald Trump’s 100th day in office, we are unlocking our usual debate format from its traditional strictures to make room for the many intersecting avenues of spirited argument those first hundred days have provoked.
Put more simply, on a night we are calling, “Unresolved: Trump's First 100 Days,” we will actually be staging FOUR (micro) debates, in sequence, around the four following motions:
-America First Is a Sound Policy Direction
-The Stock Market Says Trump Is Good for the Economy
-Trump Has Picked a Terrific Team
-The Press IS Out to Get Trump
We’ll have five debaters (link for names and bios here), who will only reveal their positions, YES or NO, at the start of each (micro) debate. Given their various backgrounds and points of view on politics and Trump, that should make for some interesting and surprising faceoffs, and perhaps the occasional teaming of odd bedfellows.
It’s a bit of an experiment for us, and we’d love you to be part of it. You can get tickets here to make it in person. Or, if you’re far away, you can join us by live stream here. And since we do stream globally, share this note with your friends overseas. Let them know…April 24th… it’s Troomp Night at Intelligence Squared U.S.!
