Are You There, God? It’s Me, John.

More We Evolve Less We Need God

Our debate on Tuesday will be one for the ages when Dr. Deepak Chopra and Michael Shermer face off at the crossroads of science, spirituality, and the supernatural.

Here’s the resolution they’ll be debating: The More We Evolve, the Less We Need God.

Chopra, of course, is the monumental writer of dozens of books on alternative medicine and the essential nature of consciousness, who has long argued that reality extends to places far beyond where the mere five senses are able to detect them.

Shermer, on the other hand, is one of America’s leading intellectual challengers of pseudoscience and belief systems built on-premises without proof. He actually edits a magazine called Skeptic.

Alongside their respective debate partners, emergency physician Dr. Anoop Kumar and cognitive neuroscientist Heather Berlin, they will examine the premise that humans, as a species, are gradually outgrowing the need for God, or a god, or any sense of greater divine consciousness in their lives.

To be clear, we are not debating the existence of God (we’ve done that). Rather, it’s the necessity of God we’re putting on the table. Can we explain the inexplicable without resorting to a concept of the divine? Can we know right from wrong without checking in with higher authority?

We get started at 7 PM at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College. We’re livestreaming too. Either way, you can be there, I hope you’ll join us.

Yours truly,

John
