An award-winning live event, national radio show, television show, podcast and thriving digital brand, the Intelligence Squared U.S. debate series seeks an Editorial & Research Director.

IQ2US is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization seeking a goal-oriented and self-directed individual who is inspired by our mission and will want to tell its story.

 

The Editorial & Research Director for Intelligence Squared U.S. will work closely with all members of the editorial team to plan, coordinate, and edit all written copy related to debates and social media.  In addition to crafting debate descriptions and social media postings – and editing and synthesizing debater bios, the Editorial & Research Director will be responsible for writing and publishing a weekly newsletter that goes out to all Intelligence Squared U.S. subscribers.  This person in this role will be a seasoned writer who is adept at conveying information in unbiased tones and has an awareness about brand building through various types of written content.

 

In a research capacity, this individual will assist producers with research related to upcoming debates, as well as potential debaters and will help direct the preparation of high-level research briefs for internal teams and external partners.   The ideal candidate will be intellectually curious about current domestic and foreign affairs and must thrive in a deadline-oriented environment.  The Editorial & Research Director is someone with a strong writing background, who is a master of language fundamentals, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.     The Editorial & Research Director will report to the Chief Content Officer.

 

The candidate will know how to amplify written content through digital channels and will be able to organize, prioritize, and track a large volume of projects and tasks; possess exceptional attention to detail and a high bar for quality; must be able to work well across internal functional teams; and must be a critical thinker who displays sound judgment in prioritizing actions based on outcomes and data. This individual must also demonstrate an ability to produce exceptional copy with a strong ability to adapt and adjust key messages in response to social distribution optimization.

Responsibilities for the Editorial & Research Director include:

  • Providing written content for the weekly debate program, inclusive of online debate descriptions, edited debater bios, written content for social media posts, as well as a weekly newsletter designed to engage and build a digital audience around a weekly topic.
  • Swiftly conducting research related to proposed debate topics and potential debaters.
  • Active participation in the topic and guest ideation process.
  • Expert assistance with the executive summaries prepared and provided to internal and external audiences.
  • Occasional internal presentation materials including pitch decks, reports, and branded materials.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior relevant work experience with a required with a minimum of 5 years of experience as a writer/researcher. Experience in journalism and media a huge plus.
  • Interest in public policy issues is essential. You’re a sophisticated news consumer, interested in political science, and are intellectually curious about both sides of the issues.
  • You’re a great writer and can bring a new voice to the organization and social feeds.
  • You’re comfortable communicating and interfacing with all types of people at all varying levels.
  • You have a strong understanding of the podcast / radio / streaming landscape.
  • You have experience with small organizations and are comfortable leading collaboration amongst external teams.
  • You are ambitious, creative, and have a sense of humor.
