Head of Editorial

A non-partisan, non-profit organization, Intelligence Squared U.S. addresses a fundamental problem in America: the extreme polarization of our nation and our politics. We are seeking an Head of Editorial to serve as the content development and editorial engine behind both our award-winning debate series and a host of new initiatives aimed at expanding the organization and deepening our impact. The position is based in our NYC headquarters and reports to the CEO.

 

About the Position:

The Head of Editorial will oversee a small-but-mighty research team and will operate as the ultimate editorial authority for the program. This role will own IQ2’s full roster of programming, including content for television, podcast, public radio, and digital platforms. Always intellectually curious, the successful candidate will be deeply committed to promoting a competition of ideas on everything from law and politics to foreign affairs to innovations in science and tech. They will enthusiastically embrace our nonpartisan mission and have refined the art of setting personal politics and opinions aside at work.

 

The ideal candidate has a background and proven track record in broadcast television and/or live events. They have held leadership roles in likeminded organizations and are familiar with the needs of growing operations. The Head of Editorial will have important day-to-day decision-making responsibilities and must have the ability to develop lasting strategic relationships with a range of stakeholders, from talent to content partners to members of our editorial advisory board. They must be comfortable seeing a show through from pitch to broadcast and willing to take on a range of editorial responsibilities, including booking talent, developing research and briefing materials, and drafting marketing copy. This role will shape our programming and the successful candidate must have a clear and articulable vision for IQ2’s future. This will include not only content development goals but strategies to expand the organization’s intellectual footprint and innovate our programming for a changing media and live event landscape.

 

Finally, the Head of Editorial must share our passion for high-quality, substantive and fact-based debate. They will come to the role with a keen awareness of what differentiates us from other live event series or news programs. We strive to do more than bring compelling thinkers and ideas to stage. We create a forum that illuminates the ideological and intellectual divisions at the heart of today’s most complex and meaningful public policy debates.

 

Qualifications:

  • 10-plus years of experience in broadcast television, radio, podcasting and/or live events
  • Excellent editorial judgement and expert journalistic writing skills
  • Experience booking top-tier talent from across the political spectrum and working with high-profile intellectual leaders
  • Experience working with both and/or multiple ideological sides of the media landscape
  • Familiarity with the media and live event landscape, particularly surrounding issues related to public policy
  • Experience developing editorial across multiple digital platforms: video, social, newsletters, podcast, radio, and television
