Research Associate

Position Details:

A non-partisan, non-profit organization, Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) addresses a fundamental problem in America: the extreme polarization of our nation and our politics. Our mission is to restore critical thinking, facts, reason, and civility to public discourse. Through a series of Oxford-style debates, IQ2US provides a critical forum for balanced and intelligent discussion of issues ranging from domestic and foreign policy to cultural trends and technological innovations.  IQ2US debates are recorded in front of a live audience and distributed through public radio, podcast, and a number of digital streaming platforms.

 

The Research Associate will work directly with the VP of Programming and Manager of Editorial Operations to produce research content for the debates. This roll will conduct in-depth research for upcoming debates, including preparing research briefings and writing copy that is clear, factual, and balanced. Our ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, thrives under tight deadlines, and has a passion for consuming news from a wide variety of sources, and is intellectually curious and possesses the ability to think deeply and critically about a range of topics, including foreign policy, economics, politics, sports, culture, and technology. This position requires the ability to set aside personal political beliefs in the workplace and is enthusiastic about exploring ideas from across the political and ideological spectrum.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Compile research on various topics
  • Draft copy on debate topics for a variety of platforms, including social media
  • Maintain the “Briefing Room” section of the IQ2US website
  • Proofread and fact-check copy for internal and external use
  • Support live debates, post-debate dinners, and receptions
  • Manage administrative tasks for the research department
  • Work on special projects as assigned

 

Required Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or journalism
  • A minimum of two years of related work experience
  • A minimum of one year of professional experience managing social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) and writing for SEO
  • Excellent journalistic writing ability, research skills, and strong editorial judgment
  • Clear and concise writing skills, including the ability to summarize complex information
  • Strong proofreading skills, accuracy, and attention to detail
  • An innate curiosity and deep interest in continued learning, current events, pursuit of inventive new ideas in multiple formats
  • Strong commitment to promoting balanced public discourse and seeking intellectually respectable arguments on both sides of a given debate
  • The ability to work independently, multi-task, and meet deadlines
  • Must thrive under deadline pressure and simultaneously manage multiple priorities 
  • Ability to work late evenings on show days; periodic travel is required

Salary commensurate with experience
