Dr. Freddie deBoer is a writer, editor, and academic. He is the author of The Cult of Smart: How Our Broken Education System Perpetuates Social Injustice (2020), about meritocracy, education, and the potential for a more humane society. He regularly publishes in academic journals on the subject of Standardized Testing, and is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, the Washington Post, Current Affairs, Politico, Jacobin, and The Guardian, among others. Dr. deBoer received his PhD from Purdue University where he submitted a dissertation titled “The CLA+ and the Two Cultures: Writing Assessment and Educational Testing,” and has worked in Institutional Planning, Research, and Assessment at Brooklyn College.
