Michael Strain

Michael Strain is the Director of Economic Policy Studies and the Arthur F. Burns Scholar in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute. At AEI, Strain oversees the Institute’s work in economic policy, financial markets, welfare economics, and other related areas. He has published several dozen articles in academic and policy journals and is the author of “The American Dream Is Not Dead: (But Populism Could Kill It).” Before joining AEI, Strain worked in the Center for Economic Studies at the U.S. Census Bureau and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Strain is a professor at Georgetown University and is associated with the IZA Institute of Labor Economics, the Institute for Research on Poverty, and the Aspen Economic Strategy Group. He has served on committees, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Social Insurance, and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. His essays and op-eds have been published by The New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and Project Syndicate, among other outlets. Strain has testified before Congress and is frequently interviewed on radio and television, including CNBC, MSNBC, and NPR.
